A few months back I was scrolling through Instagram and came across one of the minimalist accounts I follow (her account is be.simplyfree if you want to check her out). She always has some great tips for decluttering and keeping your home clean. Anyway…in this particular post, she made the comment that you may not think you have time to clean, but then she made a comment that has stuck with me hard.
She went on to say that giving yourself 15 minutes a day to focus on cleaning, resetting for the next day, etc. only took up 1% of your day. Specifically that 1% of your day was equal to 14.4 minutes!
Let that sink in for a minute. How often have you told yourself that you don’t have time to work out, read, learn a new hobby, cook dinner instead of ordering takeout BUT you turn around and spend 3-4 hours or more, aka approx. 12-16% of your day mindlessly scrolling social media. If you want to rub salt in that wound, the average adult spends just shy of 7 hours online a day!
Don’t worry, I’m not picking on you at all. I am just as guilty of getting sucked into the mindless scrolling as my day goes zipping past.
I also want to make it clear before proceeding, I am also NOT saying that you can’t do these things. In fact, I would encourage everyone to take time each day to relax and recoup yourselves. But that knowledge about 1% has stuck with me and left me thinking about something else…
As followers of Christ, are we even giving Him 1% of our day?? Be honest now! I know that for the longest time I wasn’t, and when I did, that was it. Let me tell you, that left me feeling really low about myself and disappointed to say the least.
Why is it that we claim to follow Christ, but we find it inconvenient to dedicate even 15 minutes to prayer, reading our Bibles, listening to sermons among other things? Should it really be that hard to give the person who gave His LIFE for us even 1% of our day?
Now don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying that you should “do your 15 minutes” and that’s it. It is a personal decision for everyone. However I do think everyone who claims to follow Christ, claims themselves Christian, needs to step back and really reflect on where they are in their walk.
It’s a hard pill to swallow. But I think we all could use the reality check that we haven’t made our walk with God a priority in our daily lives. Instead we are worshipping an idol (social media, actors, musicians, politicians).
